EUDR and the Future of Coffee Sourcing

Building transparent supply chains together, one lot at a time.

1. A new chapter for traceability

The European Union’s new Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) marks an important step for our industry. From now on, every bag of coffee entering the EU will need to be traceable back to the plot where it was grown, ensuring that no deforestation took place after 2020.

It’s a big change, but also a meaningful one. For years, the coffee trade has relied on trust and relationships, the EUDR simply adds data and transparency to that foundation.

2. Why it matters for the coffee sector

For roasters and importers, this new regulation is not just about compliance. It’s a chance to better understand the journey of every coffee they buy from the farmer’s field to the roasting drum.

And for exporters and producers, it’s an opportunity to highlight good practices, organize information, and strengthen long-term partnerships with European buyers.

Transparency has always been part of quality. The EUDR just gives us the tools to measure it more clearly.

3. How SONECA is preparing

At SONECA Coffee, transparency has been part of our DNA since day one. We’ve always believed that knowing where coffee comes from, who grew it, how it was processed, and how it travels, is key to building trust between producers and roasters.

To prepare for the EUDR, we’ve taken several steps:

  • Continuous learning: we complete ITC course on Complying with the EU Regulation on Deforestation-free Products.
  • Traceable sourcing: we collect farm-level and GPS data for every lot we handle, starting with our partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
  • Collaborative logistics: by grouping shipments, we make traceability and compliance easier for small roasters who want to buy directly from origin.

We see this as a natural extension of our mission: to make direct trade simpler, fairer, and more transparent for everyone involved.

4. A shared responsibility

No one can meet the EUDR requirements alone, it’s a collective effort across the value chain. The good news is that collaboration has always been at the heart of the coffee world.

From exporters and cooperatives to roasters and importers, every step matters. Together, we can make sure that compliance becomes an opportunity to strengthen relationships and improve traceability for the long term.

Because transparency doesn’t just protect forests, it protects the future of coffee itself.
